Mark's love for salsa traces back to 1994, during his tenure as a music student at the University of New Orleans. At Café Brazil in the French Quarter, he encountered live salsa music for the first time and was immediately drawn to its pulsating rhythm and dynamic energy. However, it was not until eight years later, in 2002, that he came across a live salsa band called Yumbambe at the Columbus Music Hall. This was where he began taking lessons from local instructors and regularly going out dancing.
In 2005, Mark's curiosity led him to explore New York-style salsa under the tutelage of Shezronne Zaccardi, a celebrated local salsa dancer. That same year, he attended a workshop and performance by Eddie Torres and Melissa Rosado at the newly opened Viva Dance Studio in Cleveland. During a musicality class with former Eddie Torres dancer Rebecca Sweet, Mark became intrigued by how New York-style salsa was intricately connected to percussion instruments' rhythms, particularly the Conga. Being a former music student and music lover, Mark was captivated and promptly taught himself to play the Tumbao on a set of congas.
Mark then joined a performance team led by Adolfo Indocochea and Melissa Rosado in 2007, where he developed his skills in Eddie Torres (New York) style salsa. However, Mark soon realized that performing was not his passion. Instead, he found joy in the social aspect of salsa, where he traveled to congresses and socials worldwide, met like-minded salsa enthusiasts, and danced to great music.
In 2013, Mark moved to Orlando, Florida, where he found himself engrossed in the On2 salsa community led by former Eddie Torres dancers. While in Orlando, Mark spent most of his time dancing as the dance scene was remarkable. It was during this time that he refined his skills in leading with precision and lightness.
Mark returned to Columbus in 2018 and noticed that local dance instructors lacked suitable spaces to teach their individual dance styles. Consequently, he opened The Attic Dance Studio, which was a tremendous success. Mark started DJing at The Attic and other local events until the pandemic halted all activities.
Three years later, Mark has opened Columbus Salsa Classes, LLC. He is entirely focused on teaching salsa, hosting socials, and providing students with all the resources they need to become exceptional salsa dancers and members of the global salsa community. With Mark's extensive knowledge and passion for salsa, and his eagerness to share it with others, Columbus Salsa Classes promises to be an invigorating and stimulating environment for salsa enthusiasts of all levels.
